Genoa Italy

Genoa Italy is a port city on the Ligurian Sea. The seaport here is the busiest in all of Italy and is very important for the country's economy. The city of Genoa bears the nickname la Superba which means “the proud one” due to its collection of historic landmarks. A section of the old town was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2006. Many historic figures were born here including Explorer Christopher Columbus, Violinist Niccolò Paganini, and Architect Renzo Piano.

Museums and cultural landmarks abound in Genoa Italy, so there is plenty to choose from when planning your trip there. Some of the museums offer a different taste of Italy that you won’t find anywhere else. For example, the Genoa Maritime Museum contains many artifacts and displays of what naval life was like in years gone by. Here you can view a collection of maritime instruments as well as a reconstruction of a shipwreck. If Aquariums are of interest to you, you can visit the Genoa Aquarium which is located in the main harbour area. Marine life is in abundance here, and you can see everything from fish and sharks to dolphins and turtles. A trip to the Genoa Harbour is also worth a visit and can be a relaxing end to a day of sightseeing. 

If historic sites are on your agenda, be sure to visit the Piazza De Ferrari which is located in old town and has a beautiful fountain upon which you can throw a coin into and make a wish. This area also has buildings of note which include the Palace of the Doges, The Palace of the Duke of Galleria, and the Genoa Stock Exchange. The Palazzi dei Rolli is also worth a visit as it part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. If cathedrals you seek, don’t miss the San Lorenzo Cathedral. It contains what is said to be the Holy Chalice. The Spianata Castelletto is an area of the city with raised platforms affording you a breathtaking view of the city and the harbour. 

The main landmarks of Genato include the Lanterna di Genoa which is a lighthouse that has stood proud since the twelfth century. It is three hundred and eighty-four feet high and has been restored throughout the ages. If castles are on your must-see list, a trip to Castello d’Albertis or Albertis Castle with its Gothic Revival style is sure to please you. In addition to a castle, it also serves as a museum. Everything from Mayan artifacts to Chinese weaponry can be found inside. 

Because of Genoa’s location and seaport, many museums and attractions centre on this unique feature making this city a must-see for naval enthusiasts and historical travellers alike.


Genoa Map & Train Tips

Train travel around Genoa Italy is comprehensive with twenty-six railway stations in the area. The main station is the Genoa Brignole station which is located near the Piazza Verdi in the centre of town. This station services the east end of the city while the Genoa Piazza Principe serves the west end close to the port. From these stations, you can connect to Turin, Rome, Milan, and even France.
