Italy Airport

Sometimes airports and air travel can be a stressful factor about taking a trip. However, it doesn’t have to be - especially because there's an Italy airport in almost every major city. Italy has 7 main international airports locations making this type of travel fast and convenient. There is a main airport in Rome, Milan, Naples, Venice, Florence, Sicily and Sardinia. The total number of airports in Italy is 77, including domestic and international. Depending on your plans, you might fly into one airport and out of another so plan accordingly. You may also want to book a budget flight in the middle of your travel plans to get you where you want to go faster. Let’s investigate the major Italy airport options so you can decide which one or ones are right for your travel plans.

Most Popular Italy Airport Options

  • The Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP) has a wide selection of airlines and destinations to choose from. It is the busiest airport in all of Italy, boasting a whopping 24.7 million passengers in 2018. One of the less desirable aspects of this airport is its location far away from the city centre. This airport is your connection to northern Italy including Piedmont and Lombardy. From this airport, you can take a bus or train to your final destination.

  • Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) or the Rome Fiumicino Airport as it is also known, is the largest airport in that serves the capital of Rome and the surrounding area. This area has many domestic and international flights, but it can be bustling and sometimes crowded. This airport gets forty-three million people where they need to go each year. And a bonus? It is linked with the city centre by a short train or bus ride. You can also take a taxi or rideshare vehicle from here.

  • If your travels take you to Florence, the Florence Airport Peretola (FLR) is located quite close to the city centre (only about 2.5 miles), but it doesn’t have as many flight choices as Rome. Florence’s airport handles about two million passengers a year and is the second busiest airport in Tuscany. If the airline you are flying with doesn’t service this airport, you can always fly into nearby Pisa or take the train from Rome.

  • Venice’s Marco Polo Airport is one of the busiest in the entire country, boasting more than eleven million passengers every year. You can get various types of transportation here, including flights to other parts of Europe. If you are staying in Venice, you can take a bus, taxi or even a boat from the airport to get you where you want to go.

  • If sunny southern Naples is on your tour itinerary, then Naples International Airport which is located quite near the city centre in the north of Naples and may be the right choice for you. The Naples Airport handles ten million passengers a year and is the best airport for tours of Pompeii. The downside of this airport is that there are no train connections from here. You can catch a bus or a taxi from here if that works with your plans.

These are just a few of the airport options in Italy. As mentioned, there are 77 Italy airport options offering domestic and international service, so you are bound to find one that is just right for your travel plans. Good luck and soft landings!
