Lazio Italy is a region in central part of the Italian peninsula and has a population of approximately 5.9 million. It is the second most populated region in the country. The capital of the region of Lazio is Rome. Rome also serves as the capital of Italy and the biggest city in the country. The region of Lazio is 6,657 square miles, and it borders with Tuscany, Umbria, and Marche in the north, Campania in the east and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west. Its coast is mostly sandy beaches, and the rest of the region is flat with some tiny mountainous areas.

No visit to the Lazio region would be complete without a visit to its capital, Rome. Rome has a wealth of culture and architecture to suit the needs of every traveler. The ancient ruins of the Forum and Colosseum evoke memories of the ancient history that took place there. The Vatican City which is the home of the Catholic Church and St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as the Vatican Museum, are not to be missed. The center of Rome is another sight to behold. Both the Vatican and the Center of Rome have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 

After Rome, a visit to Tivoli in Lazio Italy region should also be on your agenda. If you love historical landmarks, be sure to visit the San Lorenzo Cathedral, the Rocca Pia, and an ancient Roman Amphitheatre. It also boasts some remarkable gardens such as the Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana which was home to Emperor Hadrian. Moreover, waterfalls and many superb restaurants can be found in Tivoli.

If coastal towns are on your wish list, be sure to visit the town of Civitavecchia. The port in this area still has original elements such as the Roman Dock. There is also the Michelangelo Fort a short distance away. If you love museums, visit the National Archaeological Museum. Here you will find a collection of statues, bronze, and ceramics. If you want to see the ruins of a Roman Bath, they are nearby as well. 

Last, but certainly not least, if you wish to visit a hilltop village, Civita di Bagnoregio is a wonder to behold. More than 2,500 years ago, this village was founded by the Etruscans. There is a pedestrian bridge in Bagnoregio which takes you over to Civita. The sites of note in this charming village are the San Donato Church, the Geological and Landslides Museum, the Romanesque Arch, and the Etruscan caves.
