Lucca Italy is a city in the central region of the peninsula. It is located in the region of Tuscany and is the capital of the Province of Lucca. Its close proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea makes this a warm and temperate climate with rich plains. This city is most famous for its city walls which are reminiscent of the Renaissance era. Other things to note about Lucca is it isn’t too far from Pisa, and it boasts a hundred churches in the area.

Lucca weather is typical to the Tuscan region and being slightly north of Insular Italy the summers are usually short, humid, warm with mostly clear skies while winters are cooler, long with partly cloudy skies. Average temperature throughout the year can vary from 2°C to 31°C and rarely below -3°C or above 34°C. Best time to visit depends on the activities, for summer fun - late June to early September. Alternatively - if wanting to explore without overcrowding and muggy weather, you may want to consider coming here in late spring and early fall.

There are so very many churches to choose from in Lucca; it is hard just to pinpoint a few. But the Lucca Cathedral is a must visit. The exterior is breathtaking, and the interior contains many ancient works of art including the Sacred Face of Lucca. The Basilica di San Michele in Foro is a Romanesque church that was constructed in the eighth century but then redesigned in the thirteenth century. Its exterior contains arches and columns in a unique design, and you can even spy some animal sculpture carvings woven into the building. The interior contains artwork featuring Luca della Robbia and Filippno Lippi. Other churches of note include the San Giusto, the Basilica di San Frediano and Santa Giulia.

One thing you can’t help but notice on your trip to Lucca Italy is the ancient historical walls. You can take a leisurely walk around them on a pathway lined with soothing grass and trees. If you undertake the entire almost two-mile journey, you will see eleven historic bastions. The Piazza dell Anfiteatro is a landmark square that was once a Roman Amphitheatre. This welcoming space has many restaurants and cafes where you can sit outdoors and admire the sights. 

If you love the natural beauty of Italy, a trip to the Communal Botanical Gardens of Lucca or the Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca is a must see for you. Here you can take in the many native plants, trees, and flowers of this region. The gardens also include an arboretum, a herbarium, a few greenhouses, and even a few ponds and water features. This tranquil, relaxing setting is ideal for travellers after a busy day of sightseeing. 

Lucca Italy has two main museums to visit. The Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi has an extensive pre-modern collection of art. This late-Gothic building was erected in the early 1400s and has a stunning brick exterior with a ground level portico. The Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi is an art museum located in a Baroque palace which once belonged to members of the Mansi family and along with the art you can view original room decorations here.

Lucca Map & Train Tips

The Lucca train station is charming and has five platforms. It services regional trains only and offers service to the larger areas of Pisa and Florence. The building has a ticket office, restrooms, a shop and a café for the convenience of travelers. It’s a short walk from the train station to the city center, or if you prefer, buses are available.
