Maratea Italy is a hidden gem of a town that you might want to plan a few nights stay in while making your way to the South of the boot. It is located in the province of Potenza in the region of Basilicata. This commune is the only town in the region which lies on the Tyrrhenian coast. Maratea is affectionately known as the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian. It has about twenty miles of rugged stony coastline and boasts more than twenty beaches. It’s tranquil turquoise waters, and silver sand is a draw for tourists and locals alike. The rugged shoreline and backdrop of rocky cliffs are picture perfect and brings vacationers from all over Europe. This is a popular destination for wedding photographs. You can swim, snorkel or just relax on a sun lounger under the warm Italian sun. There are also some interesting caves to explore in the area. 

Maratea Italy has so much to see and do, most experts recommend spending a few days in this charming town so that you can soak in all of the beautiful landscapes and historical landmarks. The city itself is a definition of “charming” - little cafes surrounding main square, the aroma of freshly made baguette and coffee curling up the cozy lanes of the city, perfect spots by the city fountain to sit and observe the life while sinking your teeth into one of the best pastries you have ever eaten. Needless to say, however long you choose to spend in Maratea Italy - it is bound to be an Italian destination you won’t soon forget.


Maratea Italy Map & Train Tips

Maratea has its own railway station. The Stazione Ferroviaria di Maratea. You can travel by the coast or within the municipal area. Check the availability and schedules of the various trains to find one that will suit your travel needs. If you are flying, the closest airport is Napoli, which is about a two-hour train ride to Maratea. There is also a port, so it is possible to arrive by boat although there are no passenger boats that dock here. If you wish to take the bus, check the schedules for availability.
