Perugia Italy is located in central Italy, just north of Rome and south of Florence. It is the capital of the Umbria region of Italy as well as the province of Perugia. Perugia Italy is a popular spot for gallery enthusiasts to visit because it boasts a rich art heritage of many skilled artists of past and present. Many renaissance painters were either from, or worked in this region and many masterpieces originated here. The Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria is an excellent attraction to visit where some of Italy’s most notable art pieces are on display. 

The Roca Paolina is another recommended attraction while visiting this area. This medieval fortress was built in the mid-16th century and contains many underground passageways which can be explored. Shops and restaurants line the ancient, underground streets and are sure to surprise and delight.

The Fontana Maggiore is a beautiful fountain that sits in the city square. It was built in the mid-13th century and is an extremely detailed work of art. It displays images of numerous different saints, scenes from the bible, the zodiac symbols and even famous events in Roman history. 

The Palazzo dei Priori was once the seat of the most important citizens of this region. It is a grand medieval structure that was built in 1303 and is known for its gothic style architecture. Housed on its upper floors is the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.

Perhaps one of the best ways to experience this beautiful city is to partake in a guided walking tour. There are numerous different tours that run at different times of the day and usually take a couple of hours to complete. These tours are often given by locals who are extremely familiar with the area and will be able to provide you with detailed and personalized information about the sites and attractions of this charming, hillside town.

Perugia is also famous for its chocolate. Perugina chocolate is a company and one of the most influential fairs in Italy which also offers a chocolate-making school. The company was purchased by Nestle in 1988. A worthwhile place to visit is Casa del Cioccolato, a quite famous chocolate museum which was founded in 1997 and located in Viale San Sisto which is a 12 minute drive to Perugia.

This city is also famous for its Jazz festival which was held here as well as surrounding cities every year in July since 1993. This is a great time of year to come and appreciate the musical atmosphere and hear many talents of various musical scopes.
