Puglia Italy or Apulia, as it is also known, is a region in the Southern part of the peninsula. The population of this region sits at about four million, and it covers 7,469 square miles. Italy Puglia constitutes the “heel of the boot of Italy” and borders the Adriatic Sea on the east, the Ionian Sea on the Southeast and The Strait of Otranto and Gulf of Taranto to the south. The capital city is Bari.

Bari is the capital of Puglia, and a visit to this region wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this city. It borders the Adriatic Sea and is a port and University City. The city offers a blend of architectural landmarks coupled with modern metropolitan areas. The Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the Bari Cathedral are a must see. If castles are on your agenda, be sure to visit The Norman-Hohenstaufen Castle. If you are looking for the modern side of Bari, look no further than the Via Sparano. This section of this city is a retail dream come true with shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Art galleries are also among the treasures of Bari. Be sure to visit the Provincial Picture Gallery of Bari.

Ruvo di Puglia is a town in the metropolitan area of Bari that you’ll also want to visit on your trip to this region. This town is famous for its wine, olives, and agriculture. When you are here, you will want to visit its historic centre. It has been destroyed and rebuilt three times. Some notable buildings include the Cathedral, what remains of Ruvo’s Castle and the Museum Jatta. 

Another city of note in this region is Lecce. In Lecce, churches and cathedrals are plentiful. One of the most beautiful is the Basilica di Santa Croce or the Church of the Holy Cross. Lecce Cathedral is another must-see. If it is Roman historical landmarks you love, look no further than the Roman Amphitheatre in Lecce. If you love castles, take a trip to the Lecce Castello. 

If you want a taste of the Italian summer life, the city of Brindisi has several that might interest you. The Brindisi Port is a place where you can take in everything from fishing boats to views of the Naval Base. If a beach vacation is part of your plan, visit Lido Azzurro Beach.

Puglia Map & Train Tips

Train travel in and out of Puglia is easy, especially in the main cities. The capital of Bari has Bari Centrale, the central railway station in the centre of the city. The station includes sixteen platforms and offers both local services and out of town services. If you are visiting other cities in the region, you can use the Trenitalia railway to get you to the bigger cities or the Ferrovie del Sud to get you to the smaller places.
