The town of Stresa Italy is in the northern part of the country situated on the beautiful Lake Maggiore. Nestled in the Piedmont region, this municipality is fifty-six miles northwest of Milan. This town was first documented in 998 AD and was in the hands of a couple of different families over the years. And for the Hemingway fans out there, Ernest Hemingway visited Stresa in 1948, and his novel Farewell to Arms was set in the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromeo. Moreover, the 10th International Hemingway Conference was located in Stresa in 2002. There is much to see and do for every type of traveler in Stresa. And if you are feeling particularly daring, take the cable car that runs to the summit of Monte Mottarone, a 1492 meter high mountain. The ride is about twenty minutes and also stops at the Botanical Garden Alpinia, which is a gorgeous garden that is open in the summer months and specializes in Alpine Plants. 

There is also some interesting historical sites in Stresa. The Villa Ducale dates back to 1770 and is home to the International Center for Rosminian Studies. The Villa Dell’Orto was erected in 1900. And if you’d like to combine your villa visits with a trip to a zoological park and gardens, the nearby Villa Pallavicino is a must see. There are over forty different mammals and birds to see here. The Church of S. Ambrogio is another wonder to behold as it was restored in 1790 in a neoclassical style. 

If you love classical music, Stresa hosts an annual international classical music festival in the summer. The Stresa Festival blends both professional artists with youth who have won music competitions in an assortment of concerts which are played in villas, gardens, churches, castles and theatres around the town.

Stresa Italy Map & Train Tips

Getting to Stresa Italy is easy, especially if you take the train. Over twenty trains a day run from Milan and stop in Stresa. The journey itself takes only about ninety minutes. The regional trains get you where you want to go in a comfortable, economical and stress-free ride. If you are traveling by car, the journey is about one hour and twenty minutes. Bus service is also possible, but check the schedule for availability and pricing as it is not as frequent as the train service.
