Trentino Alto Adige Italy is a region in the northern part of the country. The English name for this region is Trentino-South Tyrol. Until, 1919, this region was part of Austria-Hungary. Trentino-Alto Adige borders Austria to the east and north and Switzerland to the Northwest. The region of Lombardy is to the west and Veneto is to the south. The region is made up of two provinces: the Province of Bolzano or South Tyrol and the Province of Trento or Trentino. Today, this region of Italy is one of the most developed and wealthy in the entire European Union. Much of this region is mountainous and home to ski resorts in the winter and hiking trails in the summer. It contains a vast part of the Dolomite Mountain Range as well as the Southern Alps.

Bolzano is a fascinating city that you must visit on your trip to this region. It is the capital of the province of South Tyrol and has many cultural sites to visit. You can start at the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology. If you would like to visit religious sites, be sure to take in the Bolzano Franciscan Monastery and the Dominican church. Castles are a big part of Bolzano and the Castel Roncolo which towers above the city and has been around since the thirteenth century. Another castle to see is the Castel Tirolo. This castle also has a falconry and houses the South Tyrolean Museum of History.

Trento or Trentino is another city that you’ll want to add to your travel plans in this region. It has many historical landmarks such as the Duomo di Trento and the Castello del Buon Consiglio. There is also a selection of museums and galleries to visit. If you love shopping, you won’t be disappointed. This area has some wonderful shops. It is also home to many of the ski resorts in the region if that is on your wish list for your trip. 

The food in this region is as unique as the region itself. Be prepared for a blend of Italian and Austrian food in this area. Dumplings are a staple as well as the meat filled ravioli canederli. A special type of smoked ham called Speck also hails from this region. And many fine wines are produced here such as Pinot, Riesling whites and Merlot, and Cabernet reds. 

The Trentino-Alto Adige Italy region has something for everyone. From ski resorts to historical landmarks and from culturally rich museums to modern shopping opportunities, visitors to this region will delight and enjoy every minute they spend in this unique corner of Italy.

Since this area is very mountainous, train travel is easily accessible in the larger cities with the countries railway network, but some areas may not be as easy to get to by train especially if you are going off the beaten path.

If you are traveling to cities such as Bolzano, which is the capital of South Tyrol, it has its own train station and is very busy. Not only does it offer high speed and overnight service, but it also carries passengers to cross border cities such as Austria, France, and Russia.
